My Life in Clothes: Red, White & Blue

23 May

Do you remember some of the outfits you wore when you were younger? Do you wish you still had them? I do. Even though some clothes were hideous, I thought they were cool at the time, and they defined my style — and the decade. Interestingly, the essence of my style hasn’t changed as much as I thought. Frightening, isn’t it?

On the right is a blouse I thought looked pretty good on me — red, white and blue patterns were really in. Again with the short shorts. Oh well, I had nice legs, so why not? This photo is proof that tying up your shirts in the front to expose your navel was in fashion way before Shania Twain made it cool. Just sayin’.

Here you can see that my ‘fro has really taken off because I finally stopped fighting my curly-haired heritage <sigh>.

Victoria

21 May

Today is Victoria Day in Canada – Queen Victoria’s birthday (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901).  Victoria Day is our version of Memorial Day in the U.S., since it represents a long weekend and signifies the beginning of cottage season. We shop, we garden, we drink beer and throw off fireworks. Nobody really thinks about the Queen.

But when I saw the movie Young Victoria with Emily Blunt, I thought about Victoria in a new light. She really was an amazing lady. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, ruled England for 63 years, and was madly in love with her husband and first cousin, Prince Albert, with whom she had 9 children.  As a young woman she was known as ‘Drina’, and was later called ‘the Grandmother of Europe’,  owing to the fact that 26 of her 42 grandchildren married into royal European families.

That got me thinking about some other famous women named Victoria. Remember Victoria Principal? She is lately known for starting her own line of skin care products and jewellery, but she is most famous for her role as Pamela Ewing on Dallas. Who can forget the famous scene where she wakes up, turns over and sees Bobby, the husband she thought was dead, lying next to her?

In an effort to get Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing) back into the show after killing him off, the writers turned an entire season into a bad dream. Viewers felt cheated, and there was quite an uproar. It’s what’s referred to in the arts as ‘deus ex machina’ – a plot device where a seemingly impossible problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with a contrived and unexpected intervention by higher forces – in this case, the producers. It was a lesson in how not to write a television episode. But you have to give them kudos for shock value.

Then we have Victoria Beckham – a.k.a. Posh Spice – fashion designer/icon and wife of David Beckham.  She’s a savvy business woman and has perfected the art of reinventing herself. As a child, she was bullied in school and other kids threw rocks at her. I’ll bet they feel pretty stupid now.

The last Victoria that comes to mind is Victoria’s Secret, the lingerie company. I have to say, they make the most comfortable bras EVER. I’ll never buy a bra anywhere else. I have to cross the border to buy them, but it’s worth it.

Disclaimer: my bras don’t have tassles, and my boobs never looked like this, even when I was younger. Just in case you were wondering.

Happy birthday, Drina.

Bag Hag Saturday #9

19 May

This is the ninth post of Bag Hag Saturday, where I defend myself against accusations that I own too many bags. If you’re a bag hag, drop me a line, I’d love to hear from you. The last time I counted, I owned about 20 bags. Do you think I’m BOD (bag  obsession disordered?)

This is a Guess clutch that I bought at The Mall at Millenia in Orlando, Florida. It is my first official ‘upper end designer’ bag purchase, and I bought it at Neiman Marcus. I was too freaked out to actually walk into a designer boutique, and shopping in a department store was less scary — and slightly less expensive.

I love the color of this clutch — it goes with anything. It’s very roomy for its size, and includes a handy wrist strap if you get tired of holding it or tucking it under your arm. I’ve worn it a lot and it’s garnered me a few compliments over the years.

My Life in Clothes: Winter Coat

17 May

Do you remember some of the outfits you wore when you were younger? Do you wish you still had them? I do. Even though some clothes were hideous, I thought they were cool at the time, and they defined my style — and the decade. Interestingly, the essence of my style hasn’t changed as much as I thought. Frightening, isn’t it?

Winter Coat, 1974

My friend in high school did modelling, so here I am being coached by her doing my best imitation of sexy, wearing my winter coat in a shopping center parking lot, leaning against a pole. I look really dumb, but  I wish I had kept this coat — it screams  ‘the 70′s’. It fit me really well, too.

As usual, I have a lot of hair happening, and in this photo it’s completely out of control. I had thick, curly hair, which I hated at the time, so I would blow it dry and brush it straight — alas, hair straighteners hadn’t been perfected yet. All I ended up with was frizz.  About a year later I gave up, got a hair cut, bought an afro comb and gave in to my curls.

Guest Blog: Character Interview & Contest – What a Girl Wants by Selena Robins

14 May

Samhain Publishing

WHAT A GIRL WANTS by Selena Robins

Warning: Side effects may include but not limited to, spontaneous, uncontrollable laughter, hot flashes and dangerous chocolate cravings. Contents include one kick-ass heroine and a sex-on-legs hero whose kiss could singe the eyebrows off a mannequin. Can be read in bed with someone special or a BOB (battery operated boyfriend.) Please note: Batteries not included.

Travel journalist Maddie Saunders has a new attitude, and wants two new accessories to go with it. One, turn her triple-X fantasies into reality with Mr. Sex-On-Legs—her friend, Alex Donovan. And two, find her biological father to see if her gene pool has a deep end. She never expected fulfilling both wishes would take her life down a drastically different path.

Alex, an investigative reporter, grits his teeth when he accepts a joint assignment to Hawaii with Maddie. He’s vowed to never get involved with any woman he can’t walk away from. Maddie falls under the heading of “Look, but don’t touch.” Trouble is, she excels at giving him a hard time—in more ways than one.

He manages to fend off her guerilla seduction tactics until a bone-melting kiss throws his resolve into the ocean. Complicated? Absolutely. Especially when he discovers the real reason they were sent to the island….

N: Today’s post features an exciting contest **details below** and an interview with the hero and heroine of What a Girl Wants, Alex Donovan and Maddie Saunders. Welcome to my blog, and thanks for being here, both of you.  Maddie, what was your journey like in What A Girl Wants?

Alex Donovan

Maddie Saunders

M: The plane trip to Hawaii, which is where most of the story takes place was uneventful—

A: I have to interrupt here. Uneventful? Is that what you call it?

M: Come on, Alex, even you have to admit it was classic. Besides, you laughed at the prank I pulled on you. Anyway, as for your initial question, Nancy, I enjoyed the adventures created for us, especially the humorous moments, but what’s a romance without heartache, physical pain, angst and conflict? I’m not complaining, especially since I know Selena will be reading this interview and she has total control of our future.

N: What about you, Alex?

A: There’s no other book I’d rather have been created in, even with all the pain we both went through. Maddie’s right, the humor helped a lot, especially when it got real serious and sorrowful.

N: If you each had a free day and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

M: You read the book, Nancy, what do you think? *wink* Okay, seriously, I do love my career as a travel journalist, and I’ve been to a lot of exciting locales, but coming home and staying put for a few days, sitting around in my PJ’s, no make-up and hanging out with my friends, enjoying a glass of wine and chatting about our adventures is always a blast.

A: What Maddie said, there are some things we both agree on, that’s one of them.

N: What’s your philosophy on life?

A: ‘Live without regrets’.

M: ‘Life’s a beach and then you have sex on it’. Not that I’m a nymphomaniac or anything, but, after all the angst, conflict and pain and the dysfunctional family Selena created for me, I have to rely on my sense of humor and not take everything so seriously…like someone else I know.

N: What scares you?

M: Needles. However, what’s really scary is when Selena gets too anal about editing and polishing. Did you know she left me in a certain position for months, I got a cramp. Thankfully, she finished the scene. Good thing I have stamina.

N: What about you, Alex, what scares you?

A: Besides the fact that sometimes I can get inside Maddie’s head and figure out what she’s thinking? Reckless cruelty, corruption, hypocrisy and knowing there are kids out there who desperately need help, but the system keeps letting them down.

M: I agree with Alex. I just tend to bury those things, because some of what he said has affected my life and the people I care about. Believe me, I’ve spent years in Selena’s draft folder, having to deal with that, until Selena yanked the story out of draft mode, stopped editing and helped me overcome my fears.

A: Uhm, Maddie, you’re still petrified of needles.

M: Uhm, Alex, you’re still scared of assisted showers.

A: I wouldn’t say scared. Besides, we need to move on before you give away too much of the plot.

N: Which of your character traits is most important to you and why? Maddie, you first.

M: My persistence and my quirky sense of humor. I had no choice, the way my life was written, if I didn’t find the humor in it, I’d be on a therapist’s couch for life.

N: What’s your biggest fault?

M: My persistence and my quirky sense of humor. It did drive Alex crazy at times.

A: It caused me bodily injury, Maddie.

M: It wasn’t my fault, I didn’t write the scene that way. Although, knowing me, I probably would have suggested that scene, but without the injury of course. *LOL*

N: Alex, your turn. Which of your character traits is most important to you and why?

M: Can I answer that for him?

A: Nancy already knows what you’re going to say, that I’m uptight, suspicious—

M: A perfectionist, a health food-freak—

A: Thanks for your help, Mads, but I can finish answering this question. My integrity, having and living by an ethical code of sound moral principles. I’m self-disciplined, as an investigative reporter this is essential, so I pride myself on my ability to remain focused, alert and possess a lot of self-control.

M: Well, there is all that of course. However, as for your self control—

A: What’s your next question for me, Nancy?

N: What’s your biggest fault?

M: Can I please answer this one?

A: Not a chance, Doll. Disclaimer: for any women out there who takes offense to me calling Maddie doll, there’s a good reason why I sometimes call her that.

M: There is, you can find out about it in chapter one.

A: To answer your question, Nancy, I’d say my biggest fault is that I can sometimes be stubborn and moody.

M: You think?

N: What are your favorite foods?

M: Chocolate and bacon. Not together….at least I haven’t dipped any bacon in chocolate as of yet. Those two things are in a food group of their own and are guaranteed rocket ships to delectable cloud nine.

A: Food that won’t clog my arteries.

N: Alex, what do you admire most about Maddie?

A: Her persistence and sense of humor.

N: Maddie what do you admire most about Alex?

M: He’s not perfect and he doesn’t wear a cape or leap off buildings, but he does have a lot of hero qualities that I admire, namely, his integrity, loyalty and ethics. Even though I love to pull a lot of pranks on him, on the whole he’s showed a lot of patience. Don’t let that get to your head, Alex, I said on the whole, you did get cranky more than once. Now, about that self control—

A: Thanks for having us, Nancy. It was a pleasure chatting with you.

M: Thanks, Nancy. Since you know Selena well, can you tell her to hurry up with her current work in progress? See, Alex and I make an appearance, and I really do want to know what happens to the hero and heroine of that book, and of course, I’d love to wave hi to the readers who read our journey in What A Girl Wants.

N: I’ll let her know. Thanks again!

The Shopping Games

12 May

Shoe Shrew and Bag Hag Saturdays will continue next week as usual. Today I’m featuring a post to honor Mother’s Day: The Mother-Daughter Shopping Trip.  If you go on annual shopping trips — and even if you don’t — hope you always find what you’re looking for!

Burlington, March 2009

Once upon a time there were two women with two daughters each. Eventually these daughters grew up into young women themselves. Now there were six women altogether, plus one of the daughter’s friends which made seven.

These seven women loved to shop. They decided to get together for one weekend every spring and go on a shopping trip. They would visit places such as Burlington and Syracuse, stay in a hotel near the mall, and shop for two days straight. In between they would eat and talk and sleep, but mostly it was about shopping and the female camaraderie that can only happen when women shop together. Like our foremothers, the women who gathered the best berries or picked the ripest fruit off the trees, shopping a.k.a. gathering a.k.a. picking was about the joy of discovering something you were looking for, something beautiful and hopefully on sale.

At night in the hotel room, the women drank wine and conducted a fashion show of their purchases. There were three rules to this fashion show. Rule #1 was to be honest about whether the item looked good on the person in terms of fit, style and wear-ability. Rule #2 was to point out if the person already had an item of similar style in their closet already — i.e. did they really need fourteen navy blue cardigans? Rule #3 was to determine whether the purchase was the result of being “shopping drunk”. This happened to all the women on occasion. To be “shopping drunk” meant that the person had lost their ability to soberly judge whether the purchase was a good one or not. It meant they had lost all control at the cash register and were approaching the dangerous territory of buying something over their budget or buying something with a hole in it simply because it was on sale.

One day one of these women met an American soldier and fell in love with him. They got married and moved to Boston. So now the six women drive to Boston every year and stay at the seventh woman’s house, therefore saving money on hotels, money that can be better spent at the mall. In Boston the malls are bigger than Burlington and Syracuse put together. For the 10th Anniversary of their Shopping Trips (2017) the women plan to hit The Big Apple.

And they will keep on shopping happily ever after.

The End.

My Life in Clothes – Raggedy Ann

9 May

Do you remember some of the outfits you wore when you were younger? Do you wish you still had them? I do. Even though some clothes were hideous, I thought they were cool at the time, and they defined my style — and the decade. Interestingly, the essence of my style hasn’t changed as much as I thought. Frightening, isn’t it?

I owned a Raggedy Ann doll as a child which I loved to death — seriously, she has no face left. I eventually got a newer Raggedy Ann, but never loved her as much as my original, which I still have in my possession even though she’s faceless.

So I simply had to own this Raggedy Ann T-shirt. I can’t remember where I bought it. Even my daughters think it’s cool, and wished I had kept it, but I gave it away in a weak moment.

Here I am on the right wearing the same Raggedy Ann T-shirt with a pair of Daisy Duke shorts. I didn’t buy those, I simply cut off an old pair of jeans. Everybody did back then. FYI, this photo wasn’t taken in the year 1720, I’m not that old. It was taken in the summer of 1975, I think. Me and two friends were standing behind a sign in the picturesque village of Port Morien, Nova Scotia, where I spent my childhood summers.

Most Loved Childhood Books –

7 May

Growing up, I was fortunate to be surrounded by books. I can still remember the incredible feeling of losing myself in a book, traveling to a new place, another time, and inviting wonderful characters into my head.

Nurse Nancy

Nurse Nancy, a Little Golden Book (Simon & Schuster 1958) was a favorite because the heroine was named Nancy, and she loved to ‘fix’ people — a harbinger of things to come. The book apparently came with a box of cool decorated Band-aids in different shapes, but I don’t remember those, since the book first belonged to my cousin Barbara.

The book is torn and scribbled on, but I don’t think that was my fault. I seem to blame book damage on everyone else — my sister, my cousin — but if I did damage any childhood books, I blocked it out, since I don’t remember doing it.

Miraculously, my Aunt Bev kept this book, and years later when I mentioned how much I loved it, she very kindly gave it to me, with my cousin’s permission.

Shoe Shrew Saturdays #8

5 May

This is the eighth post of Shoe Shrew Saturday, where I defend myself against accusations that I own too many shoes. If you’re a shoe shrew, drop me a line, I’d love to hear from you. The last time I counted, I owned about 30 pairs of shoes and boots. Do you think I’m SOD (shoe  obsession disordered?)

These are my Cole Haan flats that I bought at Nordstrom Rack last year in Boston. I didn’t think I could wear flats, since they don’t offer much support, but I found them very comfortable and make my feet look small. That’s important when you wear size 9.

Since it’s too warm for boots but too cold for sandals, these flats make a nice transitional shoe for spring, and look great with a pair of leggings.

Big Six Publishing is Dead–Welcome the Massive Three

3 May

Big Six Publishing is Dead–Welcome the Massive Three.

After being ignored for eleven years by the NYC Gate Keepers and kept out of the Club, am I a bad person if I gloat just a little bit? I think I’m going to hell in a handbasket …
